The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

Merry Christmas, all! I really hope you had/will have a marvelous Christmas! As usual, I don't have so much time to run my deviantArt gallery/blog, I'm the shadow one, you know ^_^

But today I need your help so, here I'm to trouble you with my silly questions! As many of you know, I published my first book of illustration almost a year ago. It was a Limited Edition Print, sold in just few weeks. Many of you couldn't actually get a copy of it and by popular request I think to publish another book of illustrations within the end of 2010 - hopefully before next Summer. I think of self-publishing it and I'm looking for good advices, trips, suggestions from fellow artists who already have tried to print their own art-books by using online services as the ones available on Lulu.com, for example. My main trouble is finding a good print service, obviously not so expensive! Or maybe, union is strength, and I could try to publish a collective art-book together with other illustrators ...

Ok, you have all the Christmas holidays to think about that and give me advices ^_^

Lulu seems good quality but the cost ends up making it so you have to price the books very high

I agree. I've found some online printers which offer the same products but the prices are cheaper. The problem is I don't if the printing quality is good or not...

Secondo me dovresti provare una tipografia in cui puoi seguire il lavoro (correggere eventuali errori) e vedere come procedono; alcune sono molto professionali e sanno come e cosa consigliarti in merito anche a scelte grafiche e di impaginazione, numero di pagine and so on (almeno per quanto riguarda la mia esperienza)...io non mi fiderei al 100% dei servizi online ma a quanto pare alcuni ne restano molto soddisfatti.

Allora, in effetti la mia prima intenzione e' stata proprio di affidarmi a una tipografia in loco. Il problema e' che se vuoi ammortizzare un minimo i costi, ti si richiedono un gran numero di copie stampate. E francamente non credo che venderei cosi' tanto ^_^
Rivolgendosi a un servizio online c'e' il rischio di non riuscire a gestire tutto al 100% anche se per quello che ho visto, molti siti offrono gratis una copia "proof" del libro da visionare prima della stampa definitiva. E i costi sono sensibilmente piu' bassi, soprattutto fuori Europa, anche considerando eventuali spese di spedizione.

Poi, per quella poca esperienza che ho, preferirei gestire tutto dalla A alla Z. A volte i grafici tendono a 'strafare' ^_______^ con i lavori altrui, quando rivolgendomi a un servizio online sarei io a decidere come realizzare eventuali layouts, modifiche, etc, etc. Molto piu' impegnativo, ma decisamente piu' soddisfacente alla fine!
